Dwarf Arrowhead Schubert Chokecherry

Dwarf Arrowhead Schubert Chokecherry
Prunus virginiana ‘Dwarf Arrowhead Schubert’
Dwarf chokecherry is a compact, astringent native of the Prairies that produces black fruit well suited for jam, syrup and wine. It grows fast and suckers, naturally forming a multi-stem but can be trimmed to tree form. This chokecherry flowers in large clusters of small white blooms in late May to early June, and yields fruit in mid–late August about 2–3 years after planting. This variety is also less susceptible to black knot (which can be pruned out each fall if noticed), prefers full sun, tolerates drought once established but dislikes soggy soil, tends to sucker so use fabric and stone to limit suckering and avoid tilling near the base.
